Graduate student, UIUC
B.S. in Chemistry, St. Olaf College
Matt grew up in the far north of Bemidji, MN. Tired of the long, cold winters, he ventured to the opposite end of MN to study at St. Olaf College. There, he conducted research on a breadth of projects, including very preliminary work on Ni-catalyzed couplings of azoles with nitriles under Professor Dipannita Kalyani, and the development of probes for biopolymer surface area changes with Professor Jeff Schwinefus. Instead of pursuing further education after graduating in 2017, he decided to gain some industry experience. During his time at Medtronic, a medical device company, he worked as an analytical chemist, developing and validating GC and HPLC methods for VenaSeal™. After his yearlong hiatus from academia, he returned to university in 2018, joining the Sarlah Group at UIUC. Currently, he is working on natural product synthesis. In his spare time, Matt enjoys cooking and baking, playing jazz or classical music, and spending time outdoors.
